What’s Next?

Image
The question I am most often asked is not “ How do you train for running in the desert?” nor “ How do you stay motivated during those long runs? ”, but rather two simple words, “ What’s next? ” And from those who know the type of races I prefer to run, they ask the question, waiting with bated breath, hoping that I will dazzle them with something off the charts. No pressure there. Bu honestly, I don’t choose races for the ‘Wow’-factor, I keep my eyes and ears open as to what is out there, waiting patiently until I hear of a race that sends a chill down my spine, and then I know it is the next one. Choosing races of such magnitude with any other motivation I think would make it impossible to invest in the amount of training, planning and preparation necessary to pull it off. During my down-time this past winter I created an Excel spreadsheet with all the race options that interest me including all of my standard short-distance races in and around Regensburg that I run with my...

Sportliche Ziele setzen

Image
(Quelle: Impulse.de) (Click here for the English version)   Wir alle machen Ziele in unserem Leben: die meisten sind aber grob. Einfach in...

Setting goals in sports

Image
(Source: Dumb Little Man: Tips for Life) ( Hier klicken für die deutsche Version)  We all make goals in our lives, but most are rough and general. For example, after school we may want to study, then possibly work in the technical industry, eventually marry and then have one or two children. But in sports, especially for performance-oriented athletes, rough goals are useless. So there are three important aspects to setting goals in sports. Point 1. Set a specific goal We need a very specific goal; e.g. make it on the podium in the club championship, or run 10 km under 45 min within the next 6 months, etc. Of course, the goal must be realistic. As much as I would like to be Olympic champion in decathlon, it will never happen. Why such a specific goal? Imagine you shoot an arrow, but there is no target. Where should you shoot? Just in the air? No, of course not, that would be pointless. You would always pick a target and focus on it before letting your arrow fly. ...

The ‘Alternative’ Medicine Cabinet: Jin Shin Jyutsu

Für die deutsche Version klicken Sie hier With a recent injury that had me side-lined and in pain for three months, I was desperate to try anything. I’d been to the orthopedist twice and my physical therapist once a week to treat a neurogenic inflammation in my left ankle, essentially an over-use injury. Which of course shouldn’t be surprising to me or anyone else considering the miles I put in, but usually by taking a few days to a week off from running, combined with physical therapy, I’m back on the trails in no time…. But not this time. So when commiserating with a friend of mine, whose husband Markus, who practices an ancient Japanese healing method, was in earshot, they almost simultaneously said that it was finally time to try his therapy. I gave in when he told me that he was 100% sure that he could help me. I still wasn’t convinced, but I had nothing to lose. That was thus my prelude into the world of Jin Shin Jyutsu, a two-thousand-year-old art of healing. The Japanes...

Extremes Abenteuer: A fun night in the Bischofshof Brewery

Image
A fundraiser for the Armin Wolf Laufteam, the goal of the night was to entertain with stories of adventure while treating the audience to free beer and wurst semmeln (sausage sandwiches)! The 257-km Marathon des Sables; the Polar Circle Marathon; the 87-km, 5,000 m climb Hochkönigman; and the Everest Marathon were topics for the night. Entry was free. Donations were voluntary.  Really... the beer was free! My events are, in more than one way, worth the trip :) Could it be that I have more fun than the audience?
